SPEC Quick Response (3rd Up Date)

What's new in this week publication? The answer is "Idea". Yes! This week, since the visitors often ask the segmentation of this blog (is it for students or teachers) through our e-mail address, we will give special space for teachers and a special space for students. Of course, because the targets of this blog are teachers and students. So, in every publication we will enclose "Recommended For: Teachers" or "Recommended For: Students" sign in the beginning of each article, in order to make the visitors are not confused. This idea came, actually, after some students complained about the articles they accessed sometimes more suitable for teachers. So they needed to "scan" all the articles first to find the suitable one for them. But, start from this week publication, both of teachers and students will be easier to find the suitable articles for them. For teachers, you only have to find "Recommended For: Teachers" signed articles. And for students, you only have to find "Recommended For: Students" signed articles. So, you will not get wrong articles anymore. Students will not get tips and tricks for teachers, and teachers will not get inspiring articles that actually more suitable for their students. One more, if you see "Recommended For: Teachers and Students" sign, means that the articles are both for teachers and students. Of course. What an easy accessible article!
Besides that, specsmansabuk@gmail.com aslo received a message contained a very good suggestion in the last few days: every publication would be better if it has specific topic such as culture, education, trends, etc. With a certain topic, the articles will give more understanding too, about the in what field this blog focus on. Just like a magazine that always focus on a particular theme for a particular moment. For example, in January we talk about new year celebration, in February we talk about valentine day, and so on. So does this blog. It would be better if it has theme in every publication. For example, (just an example) this week we talk about education. so, this week we provide articles about education in foreign countries, scholarships, online course, etc. Then, next week we will talk about environment, and so on. What a great idea! So, to realize that idea, for this week publication, and start from now, we give you articles about cultures and trend in Purbalingga. All about culture and trend in Purbalingga, guys! But, don't worry, we still have some "uncategorized" articles too. So, check them out now!

CINEMA LOVERS COMMUNITY: ACTION!

"Recommended For: Teachers and Students"

In the beginning, Cinema Lovers Community (CLC) was just a group of young man who really love making film. Independent film, exactly. Because of their similarity in hobby, finally they made a forum: Cinema Lovers Community (CLC) itself, in March 4th 2006 that consists of some local production houses. They were Laeli Leksono Film, Beda Studio, Bochary Film, Glovision Production, and SBH Entertainment. The membership of CLC is free and opened for whoever. It can be personal or community. No limitation in age and social, economy, or education background. Because the purpose of CLC just as a forum where people who love film discuss about film and make film itself.
The first program of CLC was "Bioskop Kita" that launched in Operational Room of Graha Adiguna building, Pendopo Bupati Purbalingga on Saturday, May 6th 2006. This event was programmed to run once a month. And in the first "Bioskop Kita", CLC played "Perang Bubar" by Bochary Film. But, when they had just twice in holding "Bioskop Kita", CLC was prohibited to hold it based on official letter from Humas Setda Purbalingga no. 499/VII/HMS/2006. The letter said that the Operational Room of Graha Adiguna building would only be used for database room, library, and guest acceptance room. So, finally CLC couldn't play some indie (independent) movies and they held "Aksi Keprihatinan" as a kind of protest. But Satpol PP dismissed them because they were recognized disturbing safety in Graha Adiguna and the surrounding. This even was filmed and when the film followed a festival, it was the winner of The Best Film Category in Festival Film Dokumenter (FFD) 2006. After a prohibition of handling "Bioskop Kita" CLC held "Lajar Tantjab" program. CLC played their films in some villages. CLC also went to Cilacap to socialize "Cinematography" with playing some films in Gedung Kreatif, Aula Kelurahan Tritih Wetan, Proliman, Cilacap, on September 16th 2006. This event made CLC has relationship with Sangkanparan, a community of filmmaker in Cilacap. They make a network for filmmakers and filmolovers (people who love film) called as JKFB (Jaringan Kerja Film Banyumas).

INDIGENOUS CULTURES FROM PURBALINGGA

"Recommended For: Teachers and Students"

Not much Purbalingga people in present day know Dames. it's an indigenous culture from Purbalingga that consist of 8 to 10 people and basically same as Rebana art. Dames players play rebana and gendang (traditional drum) and be combined with Shalawat (praise to our prophet Muhammad SAW) that taken from Al-Barjanji book. Sometimes, the lyrics imitates Campur Sari song. But, today Dames can't be found easily because the society are closer to pop culture (we say "modern culture") and think that Dames isn't proper to be watched because it's "out of date" culture or too ancient. They also more like watching "Organ Tunggal" or music concerts. The only Dames group today is Sinar Sari group led by Mr. Karsidi. Unfortunatelly! Other indigenous cultures from Purbalingga are Rodat and Lengger Santi. Basically, Rodat same as Dames, but it accompanied by a dance which is adopted from from Pencak Silat. And Lengger, maybe you have heard that it's a famous culture. It became very famous after a book entitled Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk by Ahmad Tohari was published. Lengger or Ronggeng is very famous in foreign countries too. Moreover, because the book had been translated into many languages.

PLAYING DOMINO TO SHARPEN ABILITY IN GRAMMAR

"Recommended For: Teachers"

Do you know "Domino Card"? If you do, you can use it to teach your students, especially to train them in arranging good sentences based on grammar. How can? Truly, the card that will be used is not the real "Domino Card". But we will make it by ourselves. Just prepare some pieces of papers, 5 x 2.5 cm. Then divide the paper into 2 parts separated by a line. On each part, put a word. The arrangement of the words can be as follow: 1. I - like 2. Love - story 3. Like - writing 4. And - poem 5. Writing - love 6. Story - and 7. etc. From that words we can make a sentence: I like writing love story and poem. To play this game, your students only have to arrange the words into sentence. Like playing "Domino Card", the same words should be piled. And, this game, actually is a very good way to vary your teaching method. On the other hands, you can make and stimulate your students to practice about using grammar directly. Ask them to conclude the writing structure and the formula of their sentence. Don't be confused, it just like a jumbled words game. But here, you have to put the scaterred words on the cards. You can fill the cards with words that will construct preferences, past events, expression of possibilities, degree of comparison, etc. So, if in scrable game your students have to arrange so many letters into words, here they have to arrange so many words into sentences. Let's play!

TOTALLY DIFFERENT!

"Recommended For: Teachers and Students"

We often hear that the reason of the students learning English is because English regarded as international language and it's very important in globalization era. But it's a different case in some foreign countries where students have different reason in learning languages. Like in Australia, students learn languages to help them developing tolerance and respect to other cultures. It also encourages curiosity about the lives of people from diverse cultural background. That's different with us, right?

STARTING AND HANDLING AN ENGLISH CLUB

"Recommended For: Mostly Students"

English club or English forum or English community (whatever the name) is a good place for learning English outside of the class. Especially as a place to apply knowledge about English that have been received in the classroom. So, the activities should not like a formal class, but should be fun, relax, and give a chance to the members to use their English. Wherever the English club exist (school, college, university, workplace) actually has the same concept: as a place to use English, not just study English. So, in deciding to start an English club, you should find some other people who are interested in starting an English club and they wont be shy to practice if they asked to use their English. After that, you can talk about the things you'd like to do together. Means the activities. Maybe you will make a discussion, debates, hold a special event for education day or your school's anniversary, etc. But, please note that you must consider about the place and frequency of your meetings before you have activities.
The next consideration will be about the committee and membership. Should your club has a leader, secretary, treasurer, etc? Or you will share your responsibility? Should the members pay a weekly fee? And so on... Then, in handling an English club, the meetings should not like a formal class where you find teacher and students. The committee (if the club has committee) should not seems like a teacher. So, the committee must make the meetings just like a discussion group. Every activities done together and all rules obeyed together too. Some activities that suggested to be done in an English club:
  • discussing a hot topic from magazine / newspaper
  • debates
  • nteractive games (you can see the samples in this blog too. Find them somewhere in this blog, ok?)
  • joining English radio program in your town (if available)

SPEC QUICK RESPONSE (2nd Up Date)

For 2 weeks recently, we got messages from students and alumni. They asked for the SPEC committee to have FS besides this blog. They wanted to see the photographs of the committee and members of SPEC, and all the club's activities. By the way, thanks for their request. But, for this time, maybe we can't realize it. We are really sorry. At the moment, we are focusing on developing this blog first, to serve more useful information and help the students to practice their English. Also to inspire and motivate people in learning or teaching English. But it's possible that in the next few weeks we or our members will have FS. Don't worry! So, to overcome the curiosity of students, alumni, and visitors about the committee and the members of SPEC, this week, we enclose some of their photographs. Then, not only a request about having FS. But also question about who 'A True Dedication' is. Are all the articles made by 'A True Dedication', because in every ending of the articles always written 'Posted By A true Dedication'? Actually, 'A True Dedication' is a team that consist of the representatives of SPEC committee and SPEC junior instructor. They manage and post articles by their authority as administrator of this blog. But, on the other hands, the articles are still created by students and sometimes by teacher and alumni. After they created the articles, they gave to 'A True Dedication' team through e-mail or gave the articles directly. So, 'A True Dedication' only accept, check and edit, then post / publish the articles. And then, hopefully, you can enjoy our articles today. Keep sending your suggestions and questions. We will be very glad for receiving them. And don't forget, keep leaving your comments too for our betterment.

ENCOURAGE YOUR STUDENTS TO TEACH!

Giving homework, asking question, and giving examination are not enough to prove that your students can "use" their English. Now, it's time to challenge your students to make unusual presentation: teach their classmates!
SPEC has been practicing this "theory". Senior members (2nd grade) lead their juniors to play some games. No matter even just games. But, the most important thing is, that the commands always in English. They say "Let's play a game named.... . Please, make groups. Each group consists of.... person." They also explain the rule, guide the members, and announce the result in English. Besides handling games, sometimes they deliver material such as genre too (narrative, procedure, etc.) using Microsoft Power Point. But, of course, before they present their ability, one or two days before, the advisor or the instructor of SPEC teach them about "How to instruct" and give them the materials that should be delivered. They are prepared well by the advisor or the instructor so that they can lead their juniors well. Is it quite inspiring you?

DIGGING VOCABULARY

How much vocabularies you can memorize well? A hundred, two hundreds, or as much as kamus lengkap 300 juta? Of course, so many words. To prove it, you can make a list of words to dig your vocabularies.
Step 1: prepare a special thin book (just a thin book)
Step 2: write the Indonesian words that started by letter "A", then write the translation in English. Remember, you do not need to open your dictionary. Just write the words that you have known. For example:
- Aku : I
- Ayam: Chicken
- Ayah: Father
- Anjing: Dog
- Ayu : Beautiful
- Asmara: Love
Write as much as possible, as much as you know, without opening dictionary!
Step 3: after you finish in writing words that started by letter "A", now you write the words that started by letter B, C, D, and so on.
Step 4: memorize your words well and use them in a conversation / every time you speak, or you can make sentences that contained certain word.
Step 5: see. You can mention so many words and apply them in the real communication!
See? Now, you are "Kamus Berjalan" and you may not recognize anymore, that you can't speak in English because feeling lack of vocabularies. In fact, you have mastered a lot of words. Arrange them into sentence, and you can speak!

I CAN!

The classic problem of our students in practicing English is their self confidence. Basically, they can speak and they understand with what a teacher says. But, in fact, they often say "I can't sir". So, how should a teacher ensure the students that actually they can speak in English? I have an idea that can be applied as continuous program at school: ask your students to write the sentences that they think they know well and they can use them in their daily conversation. It doesn't matter if they write:
- I love you
- I like wearing my black jacket
- My favorite TV program is music concert
- etc.
The most important thing is, that you may not force your students to write a particular sentence, topic, or the number of sentences that they should write. Just ask them to write sentences or expressions that they know well, everyday, after they get home. Maybe they will write 3 or 4 sentences only. It doesn't matter. Let them express what they know. So, ask them to have a special book for this exercise.
Then, you should collect the books to check their work. Maybe you will collect them once a week, in the end of month, or in the end of running semester. Of course, you will find that your students can write hundreds of sentences. After that, show them the result: they can write hundreds of sentences. How fantastic! And then, ask them to repeat after you: "I CAN!". (By: Khadis, junior instructor of SPEC).

PREPARE YOUR ENGLISH TEST!

To improve students' skills in English, nowadays English test has been adjusted with international standard: TOEIC or TOEFL. So that's way, English for final test today, is so similar with TOEIC or TOEFL test, that oblige the students to answer questions in listening section, error recognition, etc. And now, to help students in preparing 2nd semester or final exam, especially in preparing English test (that will be held in the next few months), we'd like to serve the guidance. This guidance also can be used to prepare TOEIC or TOEFL test.
1. LISTENING SECTION
- THE PICTURE SECTION (PHOTOGRAPH)
a. Take a quick look at the photograph before you hear the four statements, then you ask yourselves these questions: where was it taken?, what is the main subject?, what is happening?, and who are the people?
b. Be aware to the contraction: He's (he is or he has), It's (it is or it has), etc.
c. Grammatical forms usually used are Present tense, Present continuous, Present perfect, and Future tense.
d. Be careful with the statement about photograph. Half of sentence might be true, but another half is not. For example: "He is adjusting the dials on a television set". In the picture you may see somebody is adjusting something, but not of TV.

- THE QUESTION RESPONSE
a. In this section you may have to understand well about kinds / types of questions. You have to understand some expressions used to match the question type, which begin with common offer markers.
b. Most questions about people begin with "Who" or "What". These questions are generally answered by a person's title, occupation, or relationship to another person.
c. Most questions about time begin with "When" or "How long". These questions are generally answered by time of day, days of the week, seasons, and dates.
d. Most questions about opinions begin with "What" and answered by complete sentences that begin with "It" or clauses that begin with "That".
e. Some opinion questions begin with an auxiliary.

-THE SHORT CONVERSATION
a. Before you listen to the compact disk or tape, you should read the question first, and if possible with the four options available on your test book.
b. It's very important to imagine the setting of the conversation and who is speaking: Who are the speakers?, Where are they?, What are they doing?, What is their relationship?.
c. Knowing certain vocabularies in the conversation will help you to figure out the setting. When you hear words such as assembly line, shift, plant supervisor, foreman, etc. you might guess that the conversation is in a factory. If you hear patients, doctor, x-ray, medicine, etc. you might guess that the conversation takes place in a hospital.
d. Be aware of different ways of answering the questions.
e. Look at all four choices carefully before listening and answering questions.
f. You should understand the purpose of the question.

-THE SHORT TALK
a. Before listening to the compact disk or tape, you are hoped to read the question and the four possible answers.
b. To answer the questions about details, you will need to pay good attention to specific facts, times, and dates.
c. Don't worry if you don't understand every word of the talk.
d. Listen to the whole talk before answering the questions.
e. Pay special attention to the introduction and the first part of the talk.
f. The information that you need to answer a question may not always be stated directly. You may need to make inferences, or draw conclusion from the information given in the talk.

2. READING SECTION
- THE INCOMPLETE SENTENCES
a. Prepare yourselves for the English grammar well.
b. Pay good attention to the materials such as invitation, agreeing and disagreeing, telephone handling, describing people or thing, preferences, past events, plans, directions and locations, whishes and imaginary, reservation, expressing sympathy, suggestion and advice, and expressing possibilities.

c. Remember that the words NOT underlined are correct.
d. Think of the agreement between subject and the verb, and the agreement between a pronoun and a noun to which it refers.
e. Become familiar with phrasal verbs and collocations.

c. Describing people (main idea, skimming, scanning, antonym).
d. Talking about transportation (general information, detail information, skimming, synonym).

STUDYING ABROAD, WHY NOT?

Studying in a great university is a dream of every students. Moreover, in a prestigious international level university. Nothing impossible even for "villagers", even we are not the have (rich person). How it would be possible, depends on how hard we try. Try to improve our abilities, and try to get scholarship. Yes! Scholarship is what we are talking about now. There are so many institutions and government provide scholarship to help students from all around the world reach their dream. If you interested to get more information, you can visit the sites below:
1. www.cies.org
2. www.fastweb.com
3. www.studyinaustralia.or.id/beasiswa.htm
4. www.scholarships.unsw.edu.au
5. www.uow.edu.au/about/sholarships

Still seems impossible for you to study abroad? If so, you still can study in international university without going abroad. You can take online course! Don't worry, you will get certificate and assignment like a normal school. You just have to take the class through internet. The lecturers will meet you through internet based on the schedule. Then, for online course, you can apply such as in www.academyart.edu. So, studying abroad or studying in foreign country through internet, why not?

ENGLISH vs. DIFFICULTIES

English is not only " a duty" that you must get good mark for it at school. But, English also "a measurement" of competitiveness. By mastering English we can take a part in international association, get more knowledge or information that come in English, and finally contribute something valuable to the world to show that Indonesian people also should be considered because of the ideas, works, and inventions. Means, again and again, English is very important. Difficulties such as tenses, a lot of vocabularies that should be memorized, etc. should be the secondary consideration. We should against "feeling difficult" in learning English to prepare ourselves to take a part in international association. International association here not always means that you make relationship with foreigners, or you work or study abroad. Visiting this weblog and reading the contents, accessing information on web sites, looking for tutorials through search engine, also a part of joining international association. How can? Of course, using internet means that you connecting yourselves with other parts of the world. This called joining international association.

DO YOU UNDERSTAND?

To learn to speak a foreign language well, a student must not be afraid of making mistakes. Language is for communication, the mistakes are a secondary consideration. While you are communicating, you will realize your mistakes. You can use these mistakes to improve your communicative skills. The way you say something may be different from what a native speaker says. Here is an example, a Spanish student may say "I do it" to mean he is going to do something in the near future. While communicating with a native speaker, the student will hear "I'll do it", and so correct his mistake. The student who doesn't speak will probably not notice the difference, this student will never speak good English.

Correct grammar isn't as important as communication. Remember, you must be brave to make mistakes first. Because your mistakes will be a tool for learning. By knowing your mistakes, you will get correction and your English will be better. Someday, you will know that you get betterment. So, now, if you ask your friend "What are you doing?" then he / she answers "I cook" to mean he / she is cooking ("I'm cooking"), would you understand with what he / she means? If so, means that the communication is running successfully. The same case also happen in the articles on this weblog. If you notice well, the articles on this weblog, grammatically are not perfect yet. But, as far as you understand, this weblog has successfully "influence" you. So, once again, please remember:
1. It doesn't matter for you to say "I do it" to mean "I will do it".
2. It doesn't matter for you to say "I cook" to mean "I'm cooking".
3. It doesn't matter for you to say "I visit my grandfather last week" to mean "I visited my grandfather last week".
4. It doesn't matter for you to say "I finish my homework" to mean "I have finished my homework".
5. etc.
(adapted freely from 1st edition of ENGLISH IS FUN by David L. Larcom).

US - UK ENGLISH

WHICH ONE IS YOUR STYLE?

Another confusing thing in using English, besides grammar and structure, is the difference in writing some words. Generally, "international English" divided into American and British English. They commonly written as US and UK to differ the writing style. Don't worry, American and British English are just variations of the same language. The main differences are small changes in grammar, spelling, pronunciation, and vocabulary. But, you will usually be able to understand! Both of American and British English are good. They just a choice, which one you like and make you comfortable in using English. On the other hands, knowledge about American and British English is absolutely needed to enrich your insight about culture. So, in the future, if you meet a foreigner, you can decide whether American or British English will be used to face him / her, based on the foreigner's origin. If you can't adapt yourselves (because you only one kind of English, for example), maybe you will get a little bit difficulty in understanding language style.
Example:
1. Bill = A piece of paper money (US) or The demand of payment (UK)
2. Chips = Crisp pieces of potato served cold (US) or Fried potato served hot (UK)
3. First floor = The floor where you enter a building (US) or The floor above the one you enter (UK)
4. Gas = Fuel for vehicles, cooking, and heating (US) or Fuel for cooking and heating (UK)
5. Pants = Trousers (US) or Clothing worn under trousers (UK)
6. Subway = A railway under city (US) or A passage under a road for pedestrian (UK)
7. Vest = Clothing men wear under jacket and over shirt (US) or Clothing men wear under shirt (UK)

Ending “-re” in UK becoming “-er” in US and some differences in writing style

SPEC QUICK RESPONSE

Many people ask to "the builder" of this webblog through hand phone, e-mail, and left comment about the interface and the target of this webblog--is it for students, teachers, or both of them. Actually, this webblog is for both students and teachers who want to practice English, share tips and tricks for English development at school, and to inspire other people in English. Alumni and visitors may take a part too. Besides that, this webblog also serves information about club's activities in SMA N 1 Bukateja. This webblog will be ready to publish your articles too. But, you must send them to specsmansabuk@gmail.com first. Of course, to be edited and be adjusted so that suitable with this webblog's character. And remember, your articles must be in English.

Constructive suggestions have been received. For the next publications, we will complete this webblog with more photographs and animation. Hopefully, we can answer the questions about the creativity we have in developing this webblog so that more interesting to be visited.

CONVERSATION DIARY, EFFECTIVE!

In developing students' abilities in English, especially in writing and speaking, we can apply what we call it as "Conversation Diary". It's a kind of a diary that can be used for exercise, more than a homework. In my college now, I learn more about English through "Conversation Diary" or we call it as CD. It is one of campus' programs to develop students' skill in English. The campus gives us two books (each CD has 20 topics) to be filled with our opinion about many things such as "doing cosmetic surgery, is it good?" or other topics, then we should retell our composition / opinions to "Contact Person" or we call it as CP. They are English lecturers, campus' staffs, or senior students who competent enough in English. They would listen to our explanation about the topic and give us questions related with the topic. It's a "small thing". but it very useful and effective to help us in learning English. Because, we are forced to practice our English (especially to speak up) and CP always help us to correct the mistakes in our composition. They give correction about writing, pronouncing, and organizing our composition for each topic.

Actually, our school (SMA N 1 Bukateja) and other schools can imitate the same way in developing students' abilities in English, through CD. Don't be shy to imitate a good thing for ourselves betterment. CD, actually can be applied both in the class and extracurricular / English club. So, as reference, I enclosed some notes about CD that be applied in my college:
1. Instructions For Students
- Put your ideas ( make a composition) on every topic provided on each page of this Conversation Diary (CD) not less than 10 sentences.
- See the Contact Person (CP), then give your CD to CP. Retell your composition without reading the text (ask the CP to listen your retelling).
- The CP will give you questions based on your ideas on the topic. You must answer the questions.
- After giving you questions, the CP will put his / her signature on your CD.
- The lecturer will always monitor your score to your composition, and take it as element of your final score.
- Say "Thank You" to CP.

2. Regulation:
- No service for less than 10 sentences of ideas / composition.
- No signature given to passive students.
- The service must be done outside the classroom.
- The students are supposed to finish 10 first topics for mid test.
- The students are supposed to finish minimum 15 topics for final test. Less than 15 are not allowed to take final test, but will be given "Make up Test" done separately after final test and consequently the test score of "Make up Test" will be reduced 10 points.
- The maximum achievement of CD score will be accumulated with other scores.

3. Note:
- Submit your CD a week before final test to your English lecturer.
- Don't lose this CD or you have to change it by the new one.

In practicing English, really, sometimes I feel nervous and suddenly lose all the words, the materials that I'm talking about. So, to improve my English, I also try to make my own "environment" that consist of my close friends who won't mock me when I do mistakes. It's effective even just for saying "hello" or "how are you?" in the morning. And, again, luckily my college has CD program that most helpful. I can realize that English isn't too difficult for our tongue.

USEFUL LINKS FOR LEARNING ENGLISH

To support learning process, especially in improving reading skill, short story can be the solution. But, the story must be interesting. With interesting story, besides we'll get entertained, we'll be more motivated too, to keep reading until the end of the story. Unconsciously, we'll have new vocabularies. Of course, from the sentences we can find words that maybe we don't know yet and finally we open the dictionary to find out the meaning. We can about genre too.

The definition of interesting story is a story that you may very interested in. Maybe you like fable ,folklore, etc. And, the web sites addresses below can help you to find interesting stories:
1. www.abc.net.au
2. www.seasite.niu.edu
3. www.short-storie.co.uk
4. www.szirine.com
5. www.dreamtime.net.au

Another website that will help you is www.ego4u.com. The web site provides games, cross culture understanding articles, tables of structure and grammar, exercises, e-card, calendar, etc. So, what are you waiting for? Improve your English by checking those web sites now!

DRILLING OURSELVES

Many people still recognize that the most difficult thing in learning English is about grammar and structure. Not too much teacher and lecturer can give simple way to solve grammar and structure problem. So, now, I want to share my experience in learning about grammar and structure by translating simple phrases and sentences such as the sample below. I started by translating word "Apel".
1. Apel
2. Apel merah
3. Apel merah yang besar
4. Sepuluh apel merah yang besar

The way above I got from my lecturer when we discussed about solving the grammar and structure difficulties. He said that every of us need to drill ourselves to reach the main goal of learning English: speaking and writing. Not only that, again, he told me to translate the sample below:
1. Bagaimana cara memasukkan gajah ke dalam kulkas?
Sebagai jawaban: pintu kulkas dibuka, gajah dimasukkan ke dalam kulkas, lalu tutup pintu kulkas.
2. Bagaimana cara memasukkan jerapah ke dalam kulkas?
Sebagai jawaban: pintu kulkas dibuka, gajah dikeluarkan, jerapah dimasukkan, lalu tutup pintu kulkas.

Sound funny? Yeah, it because English is fun. My lecturer said that although grammar and structure are quite difficult, but it doesn't mean that we may leave them. And, although the language is spoken and sometimes we can "ignore" the grammar and structure, but a perfect language will make us more confident. Just think that nothing difficult if we want to try harder. (By: Exzal, alumni'06).

SHOW YOUR OWN ENGLISH!

Many countries around the world speak English as mother tongue. The others, use English as the language of goverment, education, trade, tourism, entertainment, broadcasting, etc. There are so many variation about grammar, structure, spelling, and also pronounciation. But, they are not a big problem as long as the English still can be understood by other English speakers. Really, you'll find the differences among American English speaker, British English speaker, Australian English speaker, etc. But, the style of your English is yours, whether you'll use American, British, Australian, Singaporean English, or other English style. Your style, will show your culture too. Like in Australia, to say "How are you?", the people of Australia pronounce it as sound "Hawaya", not like we usually pronounce normally. So, although foreigners speak English everyday and everytime, not all of them speak "correctly". Most of foreigners from different countries have different style, idiom, expressions, etc.

So, let's take a conclusion that it doesn't matter to "mix" your English with your own styles in order to make you more confortable in speaking English. But, don't too excessive. Because, in communication, English and or other languages also should be understood by the interlocutor. A language isn't only yours. English is also not only belongs to the English, but also belongs to world English speaking community around the world.

People at present day like sending messages or SMS (Short Message Services)
through their handphone, included students. Moreover, the tariff for SMS is
so cheap. So, sending SMS just like a daily need. It's like a daily activity
and new habit. Sending SMS, today, is more than just a communication channel.

Related with this, it's possible to send English message through your handphone
too. How? Just like when we are sending ordinary message to kill the leisure time, by cutting
the vocal letters or changing the way you write the words so that they look like the original
words. See the samples below:
1. @ = at
2. B = be
3. B4 = before
4. Btw = by the way
5. C = see
6. Cya = see you
7. C U = see you
8. Coz = because
9. Cum = come
10. Cumin' = coming
11. Cld = could
12. Dunno = don't know
13. D@ = date
14. H8 = height
15. Hw = how
16. K = key
17. 'll = will
18. L8 = late
19. L8r = later
20. N = and
21. Nite = night
22. 2nite = tonight
23. 2 = to, too
24. 2day = today
25. 2moro = tomorrow
26. 4 = for
27. OMG = oh my God
28. PC = please call
29. R = are
30. Thx = thanks
31. U = you
32. Sup? = What's up?
33. Wate = wait
34. Wot = what

READ MORE, GET MORE

Time to make ourselves more fluent in speaking English! The way is reading
more books, magazines, articles on internet, etc. that the main language
is English. Try to pronounce by reading loudly can make our tongue more flexible.
More often you read, your pronounciation will be better. You can read news, articles about culture,
etc. Besides you will get betterment in pronouncing sentences, you also will get more knowledge.
So, for the teachers, you can give your students more articles to be read. For example, articles
about history of Halloween, harvest festival tradition, greeting and meeting customs all around the
world, etc. So, not only genre, tenses, and homework you give to your students, but also general knowledge.

ENGLISH = COOL AND FUNKY

How do you answer question "How are you?" in your daily conversation?
It must be "Fine" or "I'm not too fine". Sound standard? Yeah, that's
a standard answer and sound "kurang gaul", right? But, just try to answer the
same question with these expressions:
1. I'm as fit as fiddle = saya baik / sangat sehat
2. I'm finely tunned = saya baik / sangat sehat
3. I'm fighting fit = saya baik / sangat sehat
4. I'm in good shape = saya baik / sangat sehat
5. I'm little bit under weather = saya kurang enak badan
6. So - so = saya kurang enak badan
7. Off color = saya kurang enak badan

That expressions are called SLANG and commonly used in Australia. So, to answer
question "How are you?" we can not only answer with "Fine" or "I'm not too fine".
And, "How are you?" itself can be replaced with:
1. How are you doing? --> commonly used in America
2. What's up? --> commonly used in America too
3. Howdy? --> commonly used in Australia

So, howdy guys? I'm as fit as fiddle!

BEING PROFESSIONAL ADJUDICATOR

Being professional adjudicator for debating championship
isn't always an easy thing. Imagine, we should have no personal adjudication
or neutral and fair. If the debate is good, just say it's good. But, if the debater suddenly speechless, just give no mark. Yeah, we should be fair for each match even we don't like, feel uneasy, or when suddenly we should adjudicate our school. That's true, that sometimes, professionalism should be exchanged with feeling uneasy and guilty. But, whatever, we should do what we have to.

Being adjudicator is totally different with being audiences. Being adjudicator means we should be brave to release all of our attributes as teacher in a school, for example. When we are being adjudicator, we are not a teacher of a school or, adjudicator itself isn't an instructor anymore in a debate. When we are being adjudicator, we may expect that our school "must" win, but we may not make our school wins except our school is really qualified enough. So that's why, there's a rule, no adjudicator adjudicates his own school, in order to avoid personal adjudicating or egoism for his school. It's a challenge, guys! In fact, every of us of course, has fanatic of our school.

ONE DAY SEMINAR FOR DEBATING ADJUDICATION

The most prestigious English competition in Central Java, especially in eks-karesidenan Banyumas is English Debating Championship. It's held annually, by both of Diknas and sometimes by another institution such as university. And, to more socialize debate tournament system, Student English Forum (SEF) from Universitas Jenderal Soedirman held ADJUDICATION SEMINAR in SMA N 1 Purbalingga, February 21st 2008.

Actually, it was held as exercise for the candidats of adjudicator that would be the adjudicator in English Debating Championship held by Teacher Association, February 23rd-24th 2008. But, besides ADJUDICATION SEMINAR, the candidats of the adjudicator also got socialization about debating technique in order to be socialized to their students.
Not only to be socialized, the socialization, hopefully can be the begining of debate as culture at school, especially for the schools which haven't already have debater team. Because, until present days, still there are many schools have no fix debater team. So, when they would face debating championship, they should look for the debaters. And, in a hurry.
So, hopefully, debate will be one of extracurriculars that held at school.
And, here are the summary of the seminar:

Introduction to Debate Tournament System
Three debate systems commonly used in competition:

1. Australasian Parliamentary
2. Asian Parliamentary
3. British Parliamentary

1). Australasian Parliamentary

- Two teams (Affirmative/ Government and Negative/ Opposition) consisting of three speakers each

- No Point of Information (statement to rebut opponent's case while a speaker is delivering a speech)

2). Asian Parliamentary

- Two teams (Affirmative and Negative) consisting of three speakers each

- Point of Information is allowed in the debate

3). British Parliamentary

- Four teams consisting two members in a debate which are divided into: Opening Government, Opening Opposition, Closing Government, Closing Opposition

- Point of Information is allowed

- Adjudicator will make a discussion to determine the rank of each team. Mark of the debate is based on the point of the rank

FORMAT OF THE CHAMPIONSHIP

There will be two phases:
1. The Preliminary Phase
2. The Elimination Phase

1). Preliminary Rounds

- Minimum round is three, maximum is seven

- Standing team for 1st preliminary round: decided by lottery. The next round is graded by these criteria:
* Victory Points (Win-Loss Record; 1 point for a win 0 for a loss)
* Cumulative Margin (Difference of cumulative marks in favor of and against the team)
* Cumulative Total Team Score

- Preliminary Phase adopt the half competition system (the upper standing position will meet the lower standing position)

- For more than three preliminary rounds debate, a team, which has been three times in either affirmative or negative position, will be switched to its opposite position.

2). Elimination Rounds

- There are Octo-Final (16 best teams), Quarter Final (8 best teams), the Semi Finals (4 best teams) and Grand Final (2 best teams)

- It adopts "True power matching" (best meets worst i.e. Team I at the end of five preliminary rounds meets Team 16, Team 2 meets Team 15 and so on). The winner of a round proceeds to the next round

- The position (Affirmative/ Negative) will be determined by toss coin

- Margin and team score is not considered in this round

Notes For Adjudicators:

1). The Assessment made of any debate is a subjective exercise.

2). It is possible that this personal judgment differ from that of another adjudicators.

3). Adjudicators must make judgments within a framework of procedural rules and guidelines to limit the subjectivity.

4). Adjudicators' judgment are not influenced by their personal likes or dislikes and prejudice.

5). The adjudicators adopt the role of an average reasonable person, who has the average reasonable person's knowledge of the topic but has expert knowledge of the rules of debate.

6). The average reasonable person is assumed to be intelligent and capable of assessing flaws in arguments; the adjudicator is invested with these qualities.

The adjudicator has three functions:

1. To decide which team has won the debate (win or lose, no tie!)
An adjudicator asks "which team better performed the process of persuasion, in accordance with the rules of debate?"

2. To provide an explanation of the reasons for the decision
In delivering the adjudication, adjudicators should highlight the critical differences between the teams rather than replay the whole debate. Most complaints arise because adjudicators are not able to clearly identify the reasons for the result

3. To provide constructive feedback to the debaters.
An overly sarcastic or negative adjudication may undermine the confidence of novice debaters to the point where they are fearful of speaking in public again. Feedback should be couched in constructive terms.

Assesment points of debate:
1). Matter
- Matter is the content of the speech.
- Matter includes arguments, evidence presented to support those arguments, examples and analysis.
- Matter includes substantive matter, rebuttal and points of information.

The elements of matter are:
a. Logic (An argument is logical if its conclusion follows from the premise)
b. Relevance (bring the right issue)

2). Manner
- Manner is concerned with the mechanics of public speaking and presentation of the debating case:
a. Vocal Style
b. Use of Language (Diction)
c. Use of Notes
d. Use of Eyes
e. Gesture
f. Dress
g. Personal Attack on opponents

3). Method
- Method includes the fulfillment of speaker roles
- The management of speaking times
- The allocation of arguments between speakers and the cohesion of the team.

Issues related to Method:
a. Under-time and over-time speeches
b. New matter from third negative speakers ( A third negative speaker is not permitted to introduce any new matter. If any new matter is introduced, it does not score any matter marks and it will usually attract a method penalty)

Case Study:

A. FOCUS
Focus is the point where the debate should go to. Focus will direct the debate onto something.

Example:
THW Treat Illegal Immigrants as victim not as criminal
What is expected from this motion is that both Affirmative and Negative team will make comparison on why and how they treat the illegal immigrants as victim or as criminal.
The Affirmative team must show that illegal immigrants should not be punished even though they break the law since they have been cheated by the illegal agency. It will be better if we send them back home without further court process.
Meanwhile the Negative Team believed that Illegal immigrants should however be punished and considered as criminal since they entered a country without any legal permission. There'll be no excuse for those who break the rules.
Both Second Speakers from Affirmative and Negative team should deliver further implications after the illegal immigrants have been treated as victim or criminal.

Example 2:
THBT Junk Food Promotion Targeting Children should be Restricted
The debate should concern more on whether or not we will limit the using of Junk Food Promotion/ advertisement that are used to endorse children's desire for Junk food. It will be not focus, if both teams only argue about the danger of junk food without further elaboration about junk food advertisement and how the advertisement have the power to attract children to eat junk food.

Invalid Case
Happens when the team does not prove what are required by the topic to prove.

Example:
THW Allow Transvestites to Enter Miss World
Affirmative Team defines Transvestites as someone who's naturally born as a man and at certain age change the sexual organs in to a woman (should not join beauty pageant where many countries in the world take part in it).
What are the assessments?

B. ARGUMENT
Assess any arguments that still stand until the end of the debate or have been crumbled down by the opponents. Identify the strength and the weaknesses of both competing team.

1. Hung Case
Happens when the first speaker doesn't affirm or negate the topic in itself or when the second speaker has the same arguments with the first speaker.

Example:
THW Implement Universal Health Care
The First Affirmative Team proposes the implementation of Universal health Care in USA, where the number of uninsured people is high. This speaker explains complete mechanism of implementing UHC in USA, fact and the background of the debate.
The Second Speaker explains the effectiveness of these proposals.
What are the assessments?

2. New Matter From third negative or Reply speeches
The third speaker of negative team or reply speaker are not allowed to introduce new arguments which haven't been deliver in the 1st&2nd speaker.

Example:
THBT Indonesian Movies Bring More Harm than Good
The First Affirmative speaker concerned with the condition of Indonesian teenager who have been influenced by the negative impact of Indonesian Movies (sexual content). Affirmative Team divided the cases into Producers Point of View and Teenagers Point of View. At the end of the debate, the third speaker delivers the argument of Censor Board failure in censoring inappropriate scenes, and thus gives the solution to create more strict regulations.
What are the assessments?

3. Irrelevant Argument
Happens when the speakers deliver arguments which are not connected with the issues of the debate

Example:
THW Force Private Commercial Bank to Operate Branches in Rural Areas.
The First affirmative team states the urgency of operating new private commercial branches in rural area since the villagers still have traditional habit of saving the money in the piggy bank or under the pillow and to avoid those villagers to loan the credit from illegal creditor. They believed that it will stimulate better economic condition both for the rural area and the country.
What are the assessments?

4. Gradual Cases
Happens when the 1st speaker have proposals or mechanism that are gradually delivered by the 1st, 2nd and 3rd speakers.

C. RESPONSE
In order to create dynamic of the debate, rebuttal and response should be indicated by all the substantive speakers, except the 1st speaker.
Good rebuttal is not a questioned rebuttal, but it's supposed to crumble down the opponent's cases.
Good rebuttal shows that the opposing argument is based on error fact
Good rebuttal shows that the opposing argument is illogical

Team Slides
Happens when a team starts off arguing a theme in order to claim the matter being used by the opponents.

Example:
THW Increase its airlines regulations
The Affirmative team believed that Indonesian Airlines Company already implement the International Standard Operating Procedures in every airlines performances, thus in order to eliminate airline accidents, The Government of Indonesia only need to control the implementation of the code of conduct. In the other side.
Meanwhile the Negative team simply said that the case of controlling the running of International Standard Operating Procedures is their case and the Affirmative team supposed to bring the debate into making or adding the new law/ regulations in order to eliminate airlines accidents. Until the end of the debate, both teams were arguing the same arguments.

CHIKA WRITES

I like studying English. I have a dream to be able to speak in English well, because I want to be a debater. I think, become a debater can make me more expert in English, especially to speak in front of people. When I was in Junior High school, I took a part in English competition.
Altough I didn't win, but I got a lot
of experiences and I became more motivated to study English. And, because of that English competition, now I like studying English. So, for English teachers, it wil be very good, to motivate your students by encouraging them to participate in an English competition. I'm sure, after the competition they will feel "the easiness" of English, even if they can't be the winner. They will find that English is fun! Yeah, maybe a lot of students think that English is too difficult. In my opinion, they are wrong! They must study English step by step and be patient. It's impossible to master English just in one night, guys. And, to study English, we may be accompanied by English music. Not only entertained, but also study English in once. I'm sure, if we can study English well and practice our English, we can say that English is nice and enjoy.
